The vibe
Elevated and intentional -- a fine dining room that carries real cultural weight. Warm, not stiff. The Mississippi riverfront setting at the Guthrie adds a sense of place that matches the food's connection to this land.

5/5 star experience for us! We were blown away by the service, the atmosphere, and undoubtedly by the food! We each got our NA cocktails. He got OKAADAAKAABOO • "CARROT JUICE" and I got ZHINGOB • "BALSAM FIR". Both were fresh and aromatic and complimented our food so well. Wish I got pictures of those because they were pretty. We went all out on food! Our first plate that came out was the BEAN DIP & SMOKED WHITEFISH. SO GOOD! The trout and bean together with a thin jelly glaze (of some sort) was the perfect bite! I can imagine myself stopping for lunch in the summer and just getting this dip and a drink! We then got the QUAIL THIGHS with our choice dip of GARLIC SQUASH AIOLI and the SWEET POTATOES. Now let me tell you bout them quail thighs! So tender, perfect meat to breading ratio, and paired amazingly with the sauce! The thighs really surprised us as being one of our favorites of the night. When researching Owamni, I saw MANY recommendations for the white sweet potatoes and they did not disappoint! They were surprisingly much sweeter than I imagined, but its taste complimented the smoky char on the outside topped over a delicious chili oil! It really lived up to their hype! This is a must try dish! Our last “course” of food included the MARICHOU caramelized sweet corn and the BISON RIBEYE. And holy cow… we were overwhelmed! I had eaten the corn before so I knew it was delicious already as it is a perfect blend of spices and textures, the bison ribeye was next level! We expected the meat to be tough and gamey, but it was WAY MORE tender than we thought! The whole time eating, we said “I can’t believe this is bison!” We thought about ordering some sauces with it, but our waiter (who was amazing) suggested we don’t as the Demi-glace its on was fantastic! We scrapped the plate to get all that sauce when packing up our leftovers! We ended the night with ZHIISHIIBAAWAN CUSTARD. I heard many great things about this and it didn’t disappoint! Unfortunately, we were overwhelmingly full from dinner and could not finish the whole thing, but it wasn’t because of taste! Overall, I’d highly recommend all those plates! I don’t think you could go wrong with anything you pick! Our table neighbors got the GAME TARTARE, MAPLE ROASTED SQUASH, and the RED SNAPPER, and they looked insanely good. The snapper is for sure on your list for next time! Thank you Sean and Owamni staff!
Going to Owamni was a dream come true. I have been fascinated by Sean Sherman's mission for a long time, and I have been planning to visit whenever I got a chance to come to Minneapolis. The experience did not disappoint. All of my thoughts and impressions could fill a book. The food was outstanding but it wasn't just the experience of eating that was notable. As much as the food, itself, the experience of understanding indigenous food, nutrients, and dishes is so important to understanding the place we inhabit. It's shameful, really, that more restaurants of this ilk don't exist - and that they're not mainstream should tell us something about what we prize. If you're able to get a table, do yourself a favor, and go. While you're at it, support Sean Sherman's work by donating to NATIFS.
Local ingredients native to the area pre-colonization (think no refined sugars, but rather use agave or honey or maple syrup as a sweetener) in a gorgeous spot overlooking the Mississippi River. So, so, so good! Maple black beans. Wild rice and beans stuffed poblanos. White bean and smoked fish dip. Smoked turkey greens. Mushroom soup with sage oil. And a phenomenal blueberry sour beer (which led us to Pryes Brewing later in the evening). Staff we're very friendly. Good portions and a solid variety for different pallets.
Our server was lovely and knowledgable of the menu and gave great recommendations. We had the bison skirt steak with avocado tomatillo (yum, $44), the sweet potatoes with chili crisp (easily the highlight), wild rice (bland, and did not come with dried berries like the menu said which was disappointing for $15, but it was hand-harvested), and the corn cookies (hard and disappointing, $12 for two). I’ll come again and still love the premise of the place and the ambience, but some of the dishes didnt hit as well as I’d expected for the price
Sheila- our waitress, had a bubbly and had a fun personality. She gave fantastic recommendations (bison skirt steak, bison marrow and Yuca fries and custard for desert). The food was incredible- as was the tea and the Tumeric soda was divine! All of the staff we encountered were polite and kind. We can't wait to return for the Spring menu.
We decided to walk the pups by the mill ruins park and found this place the menu was so interesting we had to come check them out! Thank god they open early 10am because it was cold today and we didn’t last long walking the dogs. No wait for a table of 2 brunch storming. Our waitress was good service was definitely not fast but the experience was fantastic! We tried the cricket popcorn of course and it was really good. The sweet potatoes were really flavorful but spicy made me sweat! The elk patty and rice with duck egg amazing! The duck really good! If you do a bit of duck with the raspberry and char potatoes it’s a flavor overload! Great cocktails had the maple ol fashion 20$ is a bit steep in my opinion but not steep enough to where I didn’t have 2! This place has every meat to offer their menu is amazing and I want to come back! Not to mention great views of the Mississippi River and downtown Minneapolis!
Delicious introduction to modern Indigenous cuisine. Vegan options are clearly marked. The Marichou corn is spiced well & refreshing. The Stuffed Poblanos were stuffed to the max with a complex green mole on top, all slapped into a handmade corn tortilla. Only nitpick was needed a pinch more salt. The Corn Cookies with blackberry reduction was the star of the show & showed how much can be done without dairy, eggs, or wheat. Bonus is their espresso is top tier. Pidamayayapi ye
After four visits, I can hands down say that this is my favorite restaurant. The concept, the ingredients, the execution, the people, the space. It’s truly an experience every time I go. I’ve only been to Minneapolis two times, and both times, I’ve visited here twice. It’s that good. I love the absence of pre-colonial ingredients (wheat/gluten, dairy, refined sugar, etc), love their seasonal menu, the beautiful and creative plating, and the kindness of the staff. Couldn’t recommend this place more!
Finally got to celebrate Mom for her birthday! Owamni has been on her wish list for a while now and it was sooooooo worth it! We tried: Huckleberry Salmon, white sweet potato’s with a chili oil, green beans with crispy onions and duck remoulade, and bison chilaquiles witha duck egg. Everything was big enough to share and staggeringly delicious.
Really fantastic food and service! I went there around 11:00 on a Saturday morning and was seated without waiting. You can order from the entire menu. I followed the waitress’ recommendations and got the bison tartar (dinner menu), cured salmon (breakfast menu) and custard (dessert menu). I really liked all three dishes and will definitely come back! The ambience is also really peaceful and warm, with a lot of natural light and a view over the river
